Becoming a Real Estate Agent
If you love independence, flexibility and are motivated to succeed, real estate is the right career for you. Real Estate offers unlimited income potential, the opportunity to be your own boss, and freedom to choose the direction your business takes.

To better help you chart the course your real estate career will take, here are some items to keep in mind as you make plans:
Education
The first step to becoming a great real estate agent is learning the state and federal laws, contracts, etc.. State licensing requirements include:
  • 90 hours of class time ($450 for Real Estate School)
  • Passing state exam ($68)
  • State licensing fee ($151)

Initial Costs
Becoming a REALTOR® is a lot more like starting your own business than starting a new job. So you'll need to make an initial investment, but nowhere near what you'd need to open your own store!

Some startup costs include:
  • Business cards, Name Riders
  • Lockboxes & Key Card
  • Cell phone (with plenty of minutes to operate a business)
  • Dues for Local, State and National Associations of REALTORS® and the Wasatch Front Multiple Listing Service
  • Professional Photograph
We estimate that a new agent needs to spend around $2000 to get started.

Ongoing Costs
Self-promotion is important--you'll need to advertise yourself. The way you advertise will depend on your situation and personal style. You will reap the rewards of what you put into real estate. Most agents find that the more time and money they put into self-promotion, the more successful they are. Self-promotion is something you can ease into--start out fairly small and grow as your business grows.
